Description
The genus Cycleptus is rare in Mexico and Miller et al. (2005) believed that this sucker may be extirpated from Mexico. There are only five records of occurrence. The first one is cited by Meek (1907) as Roderiguez, probably in the Rio Salado, Nuevo Leon, the second was collected by Rivera-T. in 1968 in the Ro Bravo (=Rio Grande), 2 km upstream of Ciudad Acuna, Coahuila (Contreras-B. and Rivera-T., 1972), and above and below Hot Springs Rapids, Chihuahua, collected by Miller and Hubbs, 4 March 1977, but this locality is from Coahuila not Chihuahua (Hubbs et al., 1977), and finally, specimens identified by Hubbs and Springer as C. elongatus from Rio Conchos were taken in two localities in 1954; 1 km upstream from the confluence of Rio Grande and Rio Conchos (12 June), and in the Rio Conchos, 1 mile N Saucillo, Chihuahua (27 June). Gilbert (1980) stated that this genus is monotypic with a distribution in the Mississippi, Missouri, and Ohio rivers and in Gulfslope drainages, including the Rio Grande. In his map, Cycleptus also was shown in the Rio Conchos, but no locality was given. Miller (2005) mentioned the state of Chihuahua in the distribution of the blue sucker (erroneously cited as Meek, 1908; actually should be 1907) in the Rio Conchos. On his map, there were two locations, the confluence with the Rio Grande and the interior of the state of Chihuahua. In both cases, no locality was mentioned. It is possible that he was referring to specimens collected by Hubbs and Springer. In the most recent published surveys of fishes of the Rio Conchos (Leal-Sotelo, 1989; Edwards et al., 2002), this species was not encountered.
